Huge thanks to the Maritime Skills Academy (MSA) for commissioning me to do a photoshoot and create a new promotional film to highlight their brand new maritime simulation centre in Portsmouth. The state of the art facilities include a full mission bridge simulator and a full mission engine room simulator.
The shoot for both the photography and filming took place over two days and in that time I got to see the amazing facilities up close and came to realise the depth of experience and knowledge of the instructors and staff. Everyone was very patient during the shoot and great to work with.
It was a challenging shoot as the lighting in the bridge simulator was quite dark. This of course suits the experience of the trainees as it maximises the 360 degree video simulation but not so great for filming as you need plenty of light for the camera.
Filming areas with large amounts of screens presents another challenge. LED screens flicker on camera, as you may have discovered, if you have ever tried to film your PC screen, or TV. In Hollywood they have a whole team of people working on that aspect of a film.
It was a very enjoyable couple of days and great to see the finished results featuring on the company’s website and social media platforms.
The one social media platform where you need something a little different is Instagram with it’s square or 4 x 5 ratio images. It was nice opportunity then to create some triptych style images for the company.
