Moodle is one of the world’s most popular learning management systems (LMS), designed specifically for education. Since its creation in 2002, Moodle has become a leading tool for online learning, widely adopted by schools, universities, and institutions globally. This open-source platform offers an extensive range of features that support and enhance learning, including course management, student assessment, and communication tools, making it a versatile solution for both in-person and remote learning contexts.
I used Moodle extensively as a university lecturer for over 10 years. As well as teaching in the classroom and lecture theatre I made sure my Moodle courses had everything the student needed in an easy to follow and engaging format. My concept was that students that wished to forge ahead of the class could do that and students that had got behind for whatever reason could catch up. Plus the material was always there for revision.
Some student comments included:
“There were plenty of resources online to help with completing the assignments as well as an online book to help look over what was talked about in the sessions and to catch-up if a session was missed.”
“The quality of teaching and the ease of use of the online material have been great.”
Roll forward to 2020 and the Covid pandemic meant a whole new focus on educational platforms filling the gap where students could not travel or come to campus.
It was at that time I worked on a year long project to develop foundation level university courses that would be delivered online rather than in the classroom. Here is some feedback from that project:
“I was lucky enough to have Steve on a 12-month contract to help me and my team build 20 modules of 30 weeks of content for a client.
Steve’s experience in e-learning and Moodle was invaluable, he is a fast and efficient worker, smart and knowledgeable.
During the project, he went above and beyond and stepped in to help run the courses for the client and organising the weekly launches and checks.
I would highly recommend Steve for any e-learning/Moodle/Canvas work and I intend to use his skills in the future for not only e-learning but web development and video capture.“
Interesting fact…Moodle stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment!
